My daughter had surgery on Monday (just a minor outpatient GI scope that she had to be sedated for). Her Gastrointestinal Doctor said she had the signs and symptoms of Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) which is a chronic, allergic inflammatory disease of the esophagus. It occurs when a type of white blood cell, the eosinophil, accumulates in the esophagus and persists despite acid-blocking medicine. Luckily the biopsy showed it was not EoE, however she was diagnosed with GERD.

Symptoms: First she had a hard time swallowing, then her throat was always sore.
Resolution: Her PCP put her on an acid reflux medicine; Zantac which didn't help. The doc then put her on a reflux medicine Omeprazole which is in a group of drugs called proton pump inhibitors. Omeprazole decreases the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Omeprazole is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and other conditions caused by excess stomach acid. She was on this medicine for a few weeks then we had our first appointment with the ear nose and throat specialist to see if there was damage to her esophagus. The doctor found some scar tissue in her throat while looking with the small scope. He then sent us to the GI doctor for a full GI scope. After the procedure, we got the results back that it was not EoE but it was GERD.
Diagnosis: GERD gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Plan of action: No changes, stay on the Omeprazole forever. (Seriously WTF!) They didn't even discuss lifestyle or diet changes and most importantly didn't say one damn word about long-term effects from GERD or Omeprazole.
Mom's plan of action: Use my investigative skills to find a cure for this diagnosis and get her off this prescription ASAP. The Whole Foods Diet: The Lifesaving Plan for Health and Longevity📷 Possible side effects from Omeprazole:
Dementia https://www.cbsnews.com/news/heartburn-drugs-ppi-prilosec-nexium-prevacid-risk-of-dementia/ Regular users of PPIs had a 44 percent increased risk of dementia compared with those not receiving PPI medicationsCommon side effects may include: fever;cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat;stomach pain, gas;nausea, vomiting, mild diarrhea; orheadache. Increased anxietyRisk of chronic kidney disease vitamin B12 deficiency, which has been associated with cognitive declineOmeprazole and other PPI use is associated with an increased risk for bone fractures[1], pneumonia[2], intestinal infections[3], heart arrhythmias[4], anemia[5] and multiple nutrient deficiencies[6-8]. Now, a new study from Stanford University shows these drugs double the risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke. https://universityhealthnews.com/daily/digestive-health/if-you-take-nexium-prilosec-prevacid-or-other-ppis-beware-these-omeprazole-side-effects/ By blocking the secretion of stomach acids your body is unable to perform many normal activities which include initiating protein digestion, ionizing minerals and other nutrients for proper absorption, and signaling the pancreas to secrete digestive enzymes. It is also an important protective mechanism against infection via the neutralization of bacteria, viruses, and fungi before they can cause gastrointestinal infection. There is a currently a pending lawsuit regarding PPI's and kidney disease: https://www.drugwatch.com/proton-pump-inhibitors/lawsuit/
Our Plan of Action: A whole food diet with low carb food and sugar elimination
<br /> Since the cause of GERD is typically from a food sensitivity that causes the acids to irritate the esophagus I have decided to do a food intolerance test on her. I've wanted to do this for a very long time, however, our insurance wouldn't approve it. So I found a company that was very affordable!!! www.AllergyTest.co and I got a discount too!!! Use code WELLNESS20 to get 20% off. All you do in pull out a few strands of hair and mail it to them... easy peasy!!! Stay tuned for the results....

Milk, dairy, wheat/gluten, corn, and soy are some of the well-known triggers for GERD and acid reflux, therefore, we are trying to completely eliminate these for now. As most of you know gluten is in almost everything so wish us luck!

Fortunately, I am a health coach and recently completed a degree in holistic remedies which will help in the repair of her gut. She lost 5 pounds in a 6 week period and shes already a small girl so this isn't something we can take lightly.
Another option for a food plan is the Paleo diet which is In short, everything that is Paleo is acceptable on a gluten-free diet. ... A Paleo diet generally allows vegetables, fruits, meat, seafood, nuts and seeds, and does not permit grains, dairy, legumes and certain vegetable oils (such as soy, cottonseed, and corn).
